Trees and Shrubs |
Herbaceous Perennials |
|
If it is a showery May, then it is still ideal for planting new shrubs – particularly evergreens and almost any pot grown plant. Keep newly planted shrubs and trees well watered however. Many early flowering shrubs will benefit from pruning off of dead flower heads now, along with any weak shoots or remaining deadwood of older specimens. Begin to clip formally grown Bay trees and Buxus bushes. It is also now time to start trimming hedges – little and often makes for a far better result than an annual butchering! |
Established areas should be hoed to remove weeds to enable the plants to get off to a good start. Again, digging in a manure-based compost will reap rewards later in the year. It is also a good time to plant new cottage garden plants as there will lots to choose from your local garden centre. Provide support for taller growing plants such as Delphiniums later in the month. |

Seed raising, bulbs, flowers and vegetables |
|
|
There is still plenty of time for planting summer flowering bedding plant seeds of many varieties – in fact seed raising is often easier in May due to the better light conditions. Hardened off bedding plants (those from your cold frame or purchased from a nursery) can now be planted out, but considering protecting with fleece when the weather forecast indicates clear night skies. The dead flowers from daffodils and tulips should now be removed but the leaves left to bulb up the bulb for next year. Alpine gardens must be thoroughly hand-weeded now the get the best from these amazingly colourful plants. It is also worth topdressing them with some fresh topsoil. Fruit trees may be sprayed to prevent fungal diseases. If fruit has set, then consider thinning out so as not to overload the branches. Soft fruit bushes will benefit greatly form a dressing of nitrogen rich fertiliser about now. Watch out for insect attacks on all fruit and vegetable plants and treat accordingly – do not leave it too late or you will lose your lovely produce. It is a great time to plant herbs into pot and containers and they will provide for you all summer long with correct feeding and watering. Runner beans can now be staked to provide support. As the weather warms up they will race away so be sure to keep then well watered – consider an automatic watering system if you wish to use water most effectively. |

Lawns |
Roses |
|
Now is the time to feed your lawn, either a fertiliser or a multi-action product to help control weeds and or moss. Even with a slow release feed its still best to water the product in if there is no rain within a day or so – invest in a hosepipe and sprinkler but use water sensibly. Regular mowing is now required, but do not cut the lawn to less than 10mm (approx ½”) – the blades should also be sharp. |
Roses are beautiful plants and very worthwhile, but one must be prepared to spray with insecticide to combat rose pests which usually arrive with the warmer May weather. Remember to spray both the top and bottom of the leaves. It is also advisable to spray with a preventative fungicide to combat black spot and other diseases. |
